What is CPAP Therapy?

Continuous positive airway pressure therapy uses a machine to help a person who has obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) breathe more easily during sleep. A CPAP machine increases air pressure in your throat so that your airway doesn't collapse when you breathe in. When you use CPAP, your bed partner may sleep better too.

CPAP is used while at home every night during sleep. Your CPAP machine should be equipped with one of these features below:

  • A mask that covers your nose and mouth.
  • A mask that covers your nose only-called nasal continuous positive airway pressure, or NCPAP(most common mask).
  • Prongs that fit into your nose.

Who Needs CPAP Therapy?

CPAP devices are the most popular used treatment choices for people having breathing problems, most notably of which is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

The people with OSA experience cessations within their breathing that obstructs the airway causing the patient to stop breathing for a couple of seconds multiple times throughout the night. However, depending on the severity of one's sleep apnea, sufferers may experience anywhere from 5 to 100 interruptions per hour. These breathing interruptions can lead to a variety of health problems ranging from chronic daytime drowsiness and restless sleep, heart disease and stroke.
